Reten & the Reten Web Clipper browser extension · Last updated: 14 June 2026
Reten (“Reten”, “we”, “us”) provides a note-taking service available as a web app, a mobile app, and the Reten Web Clipper browser extension. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. It applies to all of these surfaces, with extension-specific details called out below.
Information we collect
- Account information — the email address and/or username and password you provide when you register or sign in. Passwords are never stored in plain text; they are hashed with Argon2.
- Your content — the notes, folders, and review cards you create in Reten, including any text or web-page content you choose to add to a note.
- Authentication tokens — after you sign in, short-lived access and refresh
tokens are stored locally on your device (in the browser extension, via
chrome.storage) so you stay signed in. They are not shared with anyone.
What the browser extension accesses
- The extension runs a floating note editor that you can open on any web page. It only reads page content that you explicitly select or drag into a note. It does not read, track, or transmit your browsing history or the pages you visit.
- The
storagepermission is used solely to keep your auth tokens and cached account info on your device. - Host/network access is used solely so the extension can communicate with the Reten backend to sign you in and save your notes. It does not contact any other servers.
How we use your information
- To authenticate you and keep you signed in.
- To store, sync, and display your notes, folders, and cards across your devices.
- To operate, maintain, and secure the service.
We do not use your content for advertising, and we do not sell or rent your personal information to anyone.
How your information is shared
We do not share your personal information with third parties except as needed to run the service — for example, our cloud hosting and database provider, which stores the data on our behalf — or where required by law. We do not transfer or sell your data for purposes unrelated to providing Reten.
Data storage and security
Your data is stored on our hosting provider's infrastructure. Connections to the Reten backend use HTTPS. Passwords are hashed (Argon2) and sessions use signed tokens. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, but we take reasonable measures to protect your data.
Data retention and deletion
We retain your account and content for as long as your account is active. You can request deletion of your account and associated data at any time by emailing us at the address below; we will delete it within a reasonable period, except where retention is required by law.
Children's privacy
Reten is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by updating the “Last updated” date above.
